Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD)

Pathologists are key members of the multidisciplinary and interprofessional team involved in the diagnosis, testing, and management of patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), other chronic fibrosing ILDs (CF-ILDs) with a progressive phenotype, systemic sclerosis ILD (SSc-ILD), and childhood ILDs (chILDs). ASCP is committed to helping you be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for the diagnosis, testing, and care of patients with interstitial lung diseases.

Case-based Microlearning: Diagnostic Challenges in Respiratory-Fibrosing Interstitial Lung Diseases

This CME/CMLE-accredited, case-based microlearning activity is designed to help laboratory team members increase their knowledge, skills, and competence in diagnosing various interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) and making testing recommendations based on clinical practice guidelines, while also increasing their understanding of the signs, symptoms, and disease burden of ILDs. Every few days, several questions will be emailed or sent through the Qstream app, allowing learners to hone their diagnostic and decision-making skills in minutes each week.

This case-based microlearning activity includes the following topics: best practices in the interpretation of lung biopsy results in patients with ILDs; histologic findings that may indicate an alternate diagnosis; clinical practice guidelines for ILDs; the critical importance of multidisciplinary discussions in the diagnosis and management of patients with ILDs; ILD epidemiology, risk factors, comorbidities, and disease burden; and current antifibrotic treatment options for ILDs.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to:

  • Utilize patient data (e.g., lung biopsy slides, clinical information) to differentiate between ILDs and potential mimics in lung biopsies in cases involving patients with ILDs
  • Recommend appropriate biopsy and serologic testing in cases involving patients with ILDs in accordance with clinical practice guidelines
  • Differentiate between different subtypes of ILDs based on knowledge of the signs and symptoms, disease course, and disease burden of ILDs
